Come scrivi?

I miei altri lavori includono:

(tradotta in tedesco, francese e spagnolo).
  • Romanzo YA contemporaneo This Side of Salvation, che parla di un ragazzo i cui genitori scompaiono la notte che si pensa avverrà il Rapimento. (tradotto in tedesco).

The Glasgow Lads è una bellissima serie MM ambientata in Scozia. Tu vivi negli USA.

Quasi cinque anni dopo, adoro ancora “abitare” a Glasgow attraverso i miei personaggi.

Ben rabbrividì a quella quasi-proposta abbinata a quel quasi-tocco. “Posso essere franco?”

“Naturalmente”

“Stasera, almeno”.

“E’ un sollievo.” Evan fece un passo indietro. “Adesso posso smettere di sedurti.”

“Oh, perché? Avevi iniziato?”

“Non lo so.” Evan scoccò un sorriso sghembo. “Dimmelo tu.”

Rami e roccia conficcati sulle ginocchia nude.

Reagire aveva quasi funzionato.

“I nomi, prego.”

Grazie a te, Avery!

Hiya, I’m Avery Cockburn (rhymes with Savory Slow Churn). My days are filled with beautiful men who play beautiful games in the most beautiful place in the world. Being an author is pretty much the best job ever.

I live in the United States with one infinitely patient man and two infinitely impatient cats. Readers make my day, so email me at avery@averycockburn.com, or sign up for my readers group at www.averycockburn.com/signup to get loads of exclusive Glasgow Lads bonus material. Cheers!

Hiya! I’m Ipanema and I am so happy to have you here in Romanticamente Fantasy Blog answering my questions! Thank you so much! Italian readers will be head over heels to know you better after my review on your Glasgow Lads. (in italian, HERE)

Grazie mille, Ipanema! I’m so thrilled to meet you and your readers. And thanks for reviewing the Glasgow Lads books!

First of all, let me ask you something about your writing: since when do you write? Is this a sort of need you urge to satisfy by jotting down stories on paper or  something different?

I’ve been inventing stories in my head since I was a child, when I created what would now be called “fan fiction” for everything from comic strips and cartoons to my favorite soap opera, General Hospital. But I’d never met an author–this was before the internet–so I didn’t see writing as something mere humans did for a living. I guess I thought books were magical objects delivered by storks to my local library. Then one night in my mid-twenties, I had way too much caffeine and started writing a very bad sci-fi/detective/thriller/romance featuring a beautiful woman named Edna, who may or my not have been an alien, I can’t remember. That book was never published (and didn’t deserve to be), but I was hooked on writing and knew it was all I ever wanted to do for the rest of my life.

How do you write? Do you make schemes, outlines, using tag-lines and log-lines or other techniques the very same schools of professional writing teach, or, on the contrary, you just go with the flow?

Usually my books are long and complex, so I do a lot of outlining. But last year when I started Throwing Stones (Glasgow Lads on Ice Book 1), I knew it would be shorter than the regular GL books, so I decided to have fun with the process. I began writing knowing only basic facts about the main characters: Luca was a Scottish curler and Oliver was a early-retired Canadian curler coaching Luca’s archrivals. I also found their theme song, “Shadowless” by Wintersleep, which told me that one of them was haunted by something terrible in their past and the other would help him deal with it. It was SO FUN being able to discover the story as I went along.

I read on your website (https://averycockburn.com) that Avery Cockburn is a pen name and that you decided to reveal your true name only last March. The reason for this revelation is kind of sweet and important, so can you please tell it to our readers?

Absolutely! Throwing Stones was special to me because one of the main characters, Oliver Doyle, has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) like me. I wanted to share this book with everyone in my real life, the people who know me as Jeri Smith-Ready, so they could understand more of my own struggles and how the disorder has affected my life. Like, why I am ALWAYS late (time blindness) and find boring, multi-step tasks so painful (dopamine shortage). I also wanted the book to reach more readers, and I figured Jeri could help promote the book to her (much larger) following. Unfortunately, Jeri is pretty shy (and lazy) and hasn’t done much in that regard yet. *glares at mirror*

What genre do you write with your true author’s name?

As Jeri Smith-Ready (www.jerismithready.com), my most popular work by far is the teen paranormal Shade trilogy, in which every young person (starting with the heroine, Aura) can see ghosts but older people can’t. The series begins with the death of Aura’s boyfriend, who continues to haunt her rather than passing on. She struggles to let go of him while also solving the mystery of the Shift—the event that coincided with her birth that caused ghosts to become visible—with the help of a hot new Scottish boy! It’s also available in audiobook and has been translated into German, Polish, and Brazilian Portuguese.

My other works include:

  • The Aspect of Crow fantasy trilogy, featuring a world where everyone has a magical power associated with their Spirit Animal. (Also available in German and French.)
  • The WVMP Radio urban fantasy series, about a recovering con artist working at a radio station with vampire DJs. This was the most fun to write! (German, French, and Spanish also available.)
  • This Side of Salvation, a contemporary YA novel about a boy whose parents disappear the night they believe the Rapture is going to happen. (Also available in German.)

The Glasgow Lads is a beautiful MM novel series based on Scotland’s background. You live in USA. How come you decided this environment for your series and what give you the idea of Scottish steamy gay soccer players?

I like to say I’m American by birth, Irish by blood, and Scottish by soul. The US and Scotland actually have a lot in common due to our historic ties. We love our rugged wilderness, value hard work (maybe too much), and will eat any food as long as it’s deep-fried.

Scotland has been my favorite place in the world since I first visited during university, so when I wrote the Shade trilogy, I made one of the main characters from Glasgow. I eventually the city visited for research and completely fell in love. I wanted to set more stories there, to use the knowledge I’d gathered plus continue to learn more about this unique place. At the same time, I’d fallen in love with The Beautiful Game of football, so when the idea of combining the two hit me, I jumped out of my chair and started to happy-dance. Almost five years later, I still love “living” in Glasgow through my characters.

Soccer, as you know, is a very popular sport in Italy, but homosexuality in the football milieu is still a taboo. You even put a gay/bisexual team in an amateur championship as the main theme of your series. Why did you choose this particular kind of sport? And what do you think about this deeply-in-the-closet situation in sports in general?

Like many fans, I feel that football chose me, not the other way around. (Why would anyone choose such agony? ;-D) Though I’ve written a curling novel and also curl myself, I am still most mesmerized by the drama and beauty of football.

I’m saddened by all the homophobia in sports. In the USA, soccer is probably one of the more LGBTQ-friendly sports, but there is still a long way to go, and I know that in Europe, football is as homophobic (and sexist) as our American-football culture. Over the decades, sports have made progress in fighting racism, so I hope that homophobia will soon follow.

I think women can do a lot to advance this cause. Female athletes and fans can offer a less macho—but equally fierce—face of sports, one that could change ideas of what it means to be an athlete.

Is there a couple, between John and Fergus, Andrew and Colin, Duncan and Brodie, Robert and Liam or the still-not-released-yet one, Ben and Evan, that you prefer amongst the others?

My favorite couple is always the one in the book I’m working on, haha. I think, “Aww, I’m never going to love any characters as much as these,” but then I start the next book and the new guys become my favorite.

Can you tell us something about your new characters, Evan and Ben, and give some anticipation on what we should expect from their relationship, in the forthcoming novel in November?

Evan and Ben seem an unlikely couple, but like a lot of opposites-attract pairings, their chemistry is off the charts. I think that’s because despite their differences, they’re very attuned to each other’s moods and needs. Ben and Evan are two of the least selfish characters I’ve ever written. Also, they have great banter. Here’s a sample from their first date:

Evan reached out and pulled the end of Ben’s scarf around his neck, then tucked it into the front of his coat. “How far is your place?”

Ben shivered at this near-proposition combined with this near-touch. “May I be frank?”

“Of course.”

“I like you too much to have sex with you.” Ben paused long enough to see Evan’s surprise and confusion. “Tonight, at least.”

“That’s a relief.” Evan stepped back. “Now I can stop seducing you.”

“Oh, had you started?”

“I don’t know.” Evan released a crooked smile. “You tell me.”

I know a lot of loyal Glasgow Lads readers still hate Evan for abandoning Fergus and the Warriors, but Playing in the Dark will show that that event was not what it seemed. Here, I’ll prove it by sharing the first scene:

Chapter One – 22 June 2014

Stale-iron tang of blood.

Reek of stagnant breath.

Squish of soil between bare toes.

Patter of summer rain on a million leaves.

Shift of patchy dark fabric, teasing glimpses of light.

Even now all five senses are noting and remembering, cataloging details which might prove critical in the unlikely event of survival.

Or perhaps it’s just habit, born of training and his own insatiable need to understand everything about everything.

Either way, this mental inventory keeps him going, keeps him sharp, keeps his brain from flatlining with panic while it plans an escape.

Shoved to his knees, the black hood ripped from his head, the dusty gag jerked from his mouth so hard it nearly dislocates his jaw.

Stench of fear-soaked sweat.

Pierce of twigs and rocks into bare knees.

Bass-drum pounding in every pulse.

Green leaves dripping with drizzle in the haze of dusk.

“Last chance,” the voice growls. “Give me names and I’ll make it painless.”

A glance uphill confirms they’re out of earshot of the driver who brought them here. Perhaps therein lies freedom.

Lies hadn’t worked. These people know what he is.

Stalling hadn’t worked. His people would never find him in time.

Fighting back had almost worked. But now his hands are bound and his strength is gone.

The truth is his last resort.

Click of magazine into pistol.

Ink-black of gun barrel.

“Names, please.”

His mouth opens in response, his parched lips popping apart. This truth could get him killed, and not with a merciful bullet to the brain courtesy of his own Glock. This truth could get him beaten to death, perhaps with the loss of a few significant body parts before everything went black.

The thing he has to say, it’s not the truth his captor seeks. But maybe it’s the truth they both need to survive.

(Despite Evan’s redemption, Playing in the Dark also features a scene where he and Fergus have a confrontation that will be very cathartic for Fergus fans. 😉

Do you think you’ll keep on telling us stories about the Glasgow Lads and can you tell us if new adventures will be released in the future? Do you think that Italian readers will be given the possibility to read about your beautiful boys anytime soon?

There will definitely be more books in this series! Another Glasgow Lads on Ice book will release late 2019, after the next curling season begins. This will feature Luca’s wacky vice-skip, Garen, and whichever unfortunate lad strikes his fancy next.

Another football book will come out either before or after Garen’s novel. I would LOVE to announce it here, but I’m not quite ready to commit yet. Hopefully by the beginning of 2019 I’ll be more certain. Sorry to be a tease!

As for translations, my agent is currently looking at offers from Italian and French publishers. It’s a slow process, but I promise to announce any news as soon contracts are signed.

Thank you so much for the interview, Ipanema!
